Our Story

Founded on the belief that families deserve better

Amanah Legal was founded in Kuala Lumpur by practitioners who had grown increasingly concerned with how family law matters were being handled — quickly, transactionally, and without sufficient attention to the human circumstances involved. The name "Amanah" — meaning trust or responsibility in Malay — was chosen deliberately. It reflects our core commitment: that the people who come to us are placing something precious in our hands, and we intend to honour that.

Our work focuses exclusively on civil family law in Malaysia. We do not dabble in commercial disputes or criminal matters. This focus allows our team to build genuine depth in family law — understanding not only the legal landscape but the emotional and practical realities that families face when navigating separation, divorce, and custody arrangements.

We operate from our office in Menara See Hoy Chan on Jalan Tun Razak, a central Kuala Lumpur location accessible to families from across the Klang Valley. Appointments can also be arranged by phone where in-person meetings are difficult.

Our Mission

To provide family law services in Malaysia that place the wellbeing of clients — and especially children — above procedural speed or adversarial point-scoring. We measure success by the quality and durability of outcomes, not the number of files closed.

Our Approach

Every client receives a written summary of their options after the initial consultation. We believe informed clients make better decisions. We do not pressure, rush, or use alarming language to move clients toward a particular course of action.

Our Values

Honesty in advice. Kindness in manner. Thoroughness in preparation. Respect for every person who walks through our door — regardless of how contested or complicated their circumstances may be.

Professional Standards

How we maintain quality in our work

Our professional obligations are not just procedural requirements — they reflect the standard of care we believe our clients are entitled to.

Bar Council Membership

All practising members of our team hold a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Bar Council of Malaysia and comply with the Legal Profession Act 1976.

Strict Confidentiality

Legal professional privilege protects all client communications. We have internal procedures to ensure client information is accessible only to team members directly involved in the matter.

Continuing Legal Education

Our practitioners regularly attend family law CPD programmes and Bar Council seminars to remain current on legislative developments, case law, and judicial guidance affecting family matters.

Conflict of Interest Checks

Before accepting any new matter, we conduct a conflict check to ensure that taking on the case does not create any professional conflict with existing or past clients.

Written Engagement Terms

Every client receives a clear written engagement letter setting out the scope of work, fee structure, and expectations before any substantive work begins.

Regular Client Communication

Clients receive written progress updates at each significant stage of their matter. We do not leave people to wonder what is happening with their case.

Practice Focus

Specialised civil family law in Kuala Lumpur

Civil family law in Malaysia involves a specific body of legislation and judicial practice that differs considerably from other areas of law. The Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 governs the dissolution of non-Muslim marriages, spousal maintenance, and property division. The Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) (Amendment) Act 2017 introduced important changes to how joint petition divorces are processed. The Guardianship of Infants Act 1961 shapes how custody matters are argued before the courts.

Understanding this framework — and knowing how individual judges tend to approach specific issues — takes years of focused practice. Our team has spent that time working through the High Court family division in Kuala Lumpur, building familiarity with the court's processes and expectations that benefits clients directly.

We work with families at every income level. Our fee structures are transparent from the outset, and we are willing to discuss payment arrangements where appropriate. The goal is to ensure that the people who need considered legal support during difficult family transitions are able to access it.
